Today began with my sleepy head stumbling out of the spare bed in my sister’s room to brush my teeth. I believe all the other kids were up by this point. Slowly, we all gathered to the living room where the gifts were stuffed under, around and in the tree. We waited about half an hour before everyone was gathered and ready, my grandma walked over from next door and my mother was preparing food for this afternoon.
First we un stuffed our stockings, as tradition holds. As soon as they were given the go ahead the kids began ripping at the paper restricting their presents. Anna, my 8 year old sister, acted as Santa passing out all the gifts to their respected recipients.
Before too long the floor was littered in wrapping paper, bows, and cardboard boxes. About half way through the gifts someone brilliantly started stuffing trash bags with the waste. By the end the floor was clean and everyone had their gifts in their respected piles– you’d think we’d just gone looting!
While my siblings tried on their new clothes and tested out their new toys, I hauled my score of the morning down to my apartment and then came back to the house to help prepare for the trip to my Nana’s for our third and final Christmas celebration.
The timing was a little off but we finally got to eat at about 2:00. We had the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and gravy to top it all. There was also pumpkin pie, pecan pie, fudge, and toffee for dessert!
Once the meal was complete we headed to the back family room to open gifts for the finally time. In this case, all the gifts were first handed out so that no one would have to act as Santa. It worked quite efficiently.
A few of the kids got nerf gun which developed into a war that lasted the remainder of the day. The rest of us snacked on sweets, visited and watched a movie till about 5:30 when my eldest little brother and I drive home to care for animals, the rest of the family followed suite about an hour later.
As the day comes to a close I’m relaxing in my apartment with my to lovely cats while I watch some tv to celebrate the holiday.
It was a food one!
