Throughout my time as an equestrian and horse owner, I’ve yet to have a horse get injured to the extent of having to call out the vet– until today. *rolls eyes*
For the first time in my decade of owning horses, I had the gut-wrenching experience of walking out to the paddock to see my poor mares lower eyelid had been snagged. I was able to keep my cool as I checked her over for any other injuries and made sure her eyeball didn’t show any signs of discoloration or lacerations.
Within the next hour and a half, the vet was out to assess the situation. All-in-all it turned out to be the best possible injury a horse could sustain to the eye. The eyeball was in good condition and the wound didn’t need sutures.
I was instructed to administer topical antibiotics four times daily for the next five days and to keep her indoors while the wound heals.
Not how I imagined my afternoon to go for sure– but not the worst that could have befallen my poor child.
